Heavenly Dharamshala

Why Dharamshala

Edge of the Himalayas

Euro-American town

Cedar forests

Hillside city

True global village

Surrounded by cedar forests on the edge of the Himalayas, this hillside city is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. The north Indian town of Dharamshala is a true ‘global village’. Rests on a spur of the Dhauladhar range in the foothills of the Himalayas. Situated at an altitude of approx 1500 meters above sea level in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh and has a magnificent view of snowy peaks, deodar and pine forests, tea gardens and beautiful hills. The heart of the Tibetan community of Dharamshala is the settlement of McLeodGanj, which runs along a ridge overlooking the town of Dharamshala proper. McLeodGanj is a small but bustling international centre which blends flavors of Lhasa with elements of a modern Euro-American town in the setting of an Indian shepherds’ village.

This morning after breakfast we take you on a tour visiting the two temples of Dharamshala. Visit the Bhagsunag Temple, surrounded by lovely pools and lush greenery. The Bhagsunag Temple is one of the oldest ancient temples located about 3 kilometers from Mcleodganj. Also popularly known as Bhagsunath Temple, it is highly revered by the local Gorkha and Hindu community. The two pools around the temple are believed to be sacred and are considered to contain miraculous powers of healing. The Temple is situated on way to the famous Bhagsu Waterfalls, and thus can stop by. Enjoy lunch on your own, later proceed for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Main Temple, the temple is also called as Tsuglakhang Temple. Dalai Lama visits this temple twice or thrice every year to preach and bless. Thus, the temple gets its name as Dalai Lama Temple. This temple resides very close to the residence of Dalai Lama and is related to an important pilgrimage spot. Evening you could spend some time exploring Mcleodganj . Dinner at the hotel. Dharamshala City tour

This day we take you on a day tour of the city of Dharamshala making a visit to all the must see do’s. Start by visiting the War Memorial located at the entry point of the Dharamshala town and it was built to commemorate the memory of those who fought valiantly for the honor of their motherland. There are two main attractions nearby the War Memorial-the beautiful GPG College Dharamshala, made during the British Era and a café serving fast food and beverages. Surrounded by sprawling gardens, the elegant looking War Memorial is a tribute to those brave souls who sacrificed their life for the country and this signifies that these soldiers will always be alive in our thoughts. Then we visit the famous Kangra Art Museum, a hub of art and culture of the state. Located in Kotwali Bazaar, the museum is home to various arts and crafts of the Kangra Valley, including a gallery of miniature paintings. Some of the artefacts date back to the 5th century and tourists can browse through a rich collection of pottery, sculptures and paintings. You can also spot royal dresses and shamianas, along with coins, carvings, manuscripts and jewelery. Drive to Chinmaya Tapova located in the lush Kangra valley, at the feet of the Dhauladhar mountain range, nestles the small hamlet of Sidhbari, named as 'the abode of the siddhas, or Self-realized masters.' According to ancient scriptures, this mystical place was home to numerous great saints and seers, who, through their austerities, sanctified all the earth they walked on. Norbulingka Institute is dedicated to handing down tradition and restoring standards by providing training, education and employment for Tibetans. Norbulingka's art studios include Tibetan statue making, thangka painting, screen-printing, applique and tailoring, woodcarving, wood painting, papermaking, and wood and metal craft. End your tour visiting the famous Dharamshala Cricket Ground. With a view comparable to the Adelaide Oval or Newlands, this stadium competes with the best in terms of its magnificence. It has several modern-day amenities for hosting national and international level cricket matches, with the capacity to seat a crowd of approximately 23,000. The atmosphere is infused with the serene Tibetan aura of the region, as seen in the architectural style of the main stand. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay at your hotel in Dharamshala

What travellers have to say about Awakeful Experiences.

Dear Sunita and Dudley, we got back from our Alaska/LA trip last week. We had a memorable holiday and this note is to thank you for the same! The itinerary was well thought through and captured most of the 'must-do' bits of Alaska. I must mention that you took care in ensuring we include the stuff that we like - flying, dogs, nature treks, river rafting et al Your choice of hotels was thoughtful, convenient and provided the local experience. This was our first holiday plan with your travel company. My family insists that we do the next ones with you too! have appended a couple of our Alaska pics. Thank you once again!
