8 Nights / 9 Days
Lima, Cusco & Puerto Maldonado
Arrive at Lima. Overnight at the luxurious Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel.
Your luxury tour starts this morning with a fitting excursion to the ‘City of Kings’, the historic center of Lima and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Stop at the Main Square and visit the grand basilicas, palaces and museums. Some of these buildings were constructed as far back as the 15th century. After that, it is off to admire the Santo Domingo Convent, with its vintage Spanish tiles and baroque paintings, this is a 16th-century architectural masterpiece. Later, continue the tour to the more modern parts of Lima: enjoy the bustle of San Isidro, Lima’s new financial center, and Miraflores, with a stop at the ‘Parque del Amor’ (a sort of lover’s lane) for its incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. Your next stop is the Larco Museum, where an exclusive private collection showcases more than 3000 years of Pre-Columbian history. End the day with an authentic dinner of delicious Peruvian food at the Huaca Pucllana Restaurant. Overnight at the Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel. (B & D)
Depart for Cusco and on arrival, head to the elegant Wayra Ranch in the countryside for lunch. Sit in an alfresco patio and watch the chef cook-up one Peruvian delicacy after another. After you’ve enjoyed the distinct flavours of the Andes, it is time to get a taste of its culture. Witness a horse show featuring the famed Peruvian paso horses and be wowed by their remarkably light gait and grace. Overnight at either the Belmond Rio Sagrado Hotel or Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa. (B)
Today, begin your journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas with a stop at the lively Pisac Market. Teeming with colors and tradition, it offers a kaleidoscopic variety of stalls. Browse through handicrafts, silver jewellery, alpaca clothing, ceramics, ponchos, Andean instruments and all sorts of other knick knacks. Take home beautiful souvenirs and remember, don’t forget to haggle! Afterwards, head to Ollantaytambo, the only Incan town which is still inhabited. Also called the Living Inca City, Ollantaytambo has changed little since the time of the Incas. Wander down its narrow cobblestone streets and stop to admire its temples and main squares. Get a glimpse of how life must’ve been lived all those centuries ago. One of the main attractions at Ollantaytambo, is the famous Ollantaytambo Fortress, an intricately designed archaeological complex with terraced hillsides and stone walls carved, only as the Incas could. It has been a long day today. On returning to your hotel, go ahead and book yourself a sensous body massage. Indulge a bit, it is a luxury holiday, after all. Overnight at either the Belmond Rio Sagrado Hotel or Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa.
Today, you visit the magnificent Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. But before that, a little bit about how you’ll get there. Your ride, the Belmond Hiram Bingham Train is what the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller Magazine called, the ‘best train in the world’. Explore its luxurious 1920’s style carriages and elegant berths. Enjoy a gourmet menu inspired by Peruvian flavours and authentic dance programs featuring local artists. Soak in the glamour of its old-world charm. It is a journey befitting the marvellous wonder that lies ahead. Your train ride ends in the small town of Aguas Calientes, from where you’ll board a bus to Machu Picchu. Mere words are not enough to describe this astonishing 15th century marvel of architecture. Built 7972ft above sea level, without mortar, metal tools or even the wheel, the sight of this sprawling Incan citadel takes your breath away. Explore the mist swathed complex to your heart’s content. After your tour, settle in for ‘Tea Time’ at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, uniquely located right next to the ancient outpost. Enjoy a soothing muna tea and the magnificent view. Later, board the bus that takes you to the train station at Aguas Calientes and the train waiting to take you back to Cusco. Overnight at the Belmond Monastery Hotel.
After breakfast today, you explore the city of Cusco or what the Lonely Planet calls ‘the undisputed archeological capital of the Americas’. Wander down its narrow, cobblestone streets admiring the exquisite Incan stonework and engineering. Find colonial mansions with terracotta roofs built over Incan walls and ornate cathedrals constructed over 15th century Incan temples. The city’s layered architecture, a testament to its colourful history. Your tour includes the Koricancha, the Cathedral, the Church of the Compañia de Jesus (Society of Christ) as well as other Colonial period buildings. Your next stop for the day is the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, a vast labyrinth of terraces, towers and storage rooms built around a large central plaza. Then, it is off to see other places of archeological interest, Qenko, Puca-Pucara, and Tambomachay, each more splendid than the other. Your final stop is at the charming Inka’s Expression, a living art gallery where you’ll learn a little about the work of local artisans. Top the day off with a wonderfully unique experience, a sumptuous gourmet dinner inside the Pre-Columbian Art Museum. Enjoy a bit of culture and cuisine with every spoonful. Overnight at the Belmond Monastery Hotel.
Today, you land in Puerto Maldonado, your gateway to the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most secluded and preserved areas of the Amazon. Home to tapirs, jaguars and a number of other felines, its diverse habitat includes a tapestry of lush rain forests, riverine forests and oxbow lakes. A comfortable boat takes you on the Madre de Dios river, to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge, an oasis of luxury in the middle of the thick Peruvian Amazon. After a short tour of the lodge’s trail system, you take a boat ride to witness a wonder of nature, the spellbinding transformation from day to night in the Amazon rainforest. Overnight at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge.
You wake up this morning with the chirping and chattering sounds of the jungle and get ready for another boat ride. Today, you head to the most beautiful ox-bow lake in the Amazon, Lake Sandoval. As you paddle around in your canoe, keep an eye out for endangered giant otters, red-bellied macaws, brown capuchin, squirrel monkeys and if you’re lucky, enormous black caiman. On your return to the lodge, you can experience the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, enjoying the breathtaking landscape of the jungle, from tree tops. The Canopy Walkway leads you to another incredible experience: the Anaconda Trail, 200 meters of wooden bridges set above the jungle swamps. Drink-in the spectacular views. Overnight at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge.
After breakfast, you return to Puerto Maldonado by boat for your flight back to Lima. But before the trip ends, there’s one last treat, a visit to the spectacular Inkaterra Butterfly House, which houses the greatest number of butterfly species in the world. What travellers have to say about Awakeful Experiences.
Dear Sunita and Dudley, we got back from our Alaska/LA trip last week. We had a memorable holiday and this note is to thank you for the same! The itinerary was well thought through and captured most of the 'must-do' bits of Alaska. I must mention that you took care in ensuring we include the stuff that we like - flying, dogs, nature treks, river rafting et al Your choice of hotels was thoughtful, convenient and provided the local experience. This was our first holiday plan with your travel company. My family insists that we do the next ones with you too! have appended a couple of our Alaska pics. Thank you once again!
